A medieval feast
As court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, Jan Van Eyck frequently attended great banquets and even helped organise them!
An authentic medieval feast consisted of several courses, each with several dishes. A festive meal including over twenty different dishes in total was no exception. Entertainment dishes or entremets were sometimes served as an interval between courses and to add to the gaiety. These dishes could be partly or entirely edible. They were the “conversation pieces” of the medieval meal. An example of such a dish could be a peacock served in its plumage, as if it were still alive. This type of entertainment dish was depicted in various miniatures. It has always stirred the imagination: feasters are expectantly watching a damsel carrying the beautiful bird to the host’s table.

Jan Van Eyck’s signature
Art is generally understood to mean the product of creative human expression, including painting, drawing, photography, graphic design, sculpture, modern media, theatre, music, dance, film, architecture, literature and poetry.
Every concept of art is very much a product of its time and culture.
The original meaning of the word "art" is "skill" or "craft". Many contemporary art forms originated in crafts such as ornamentation, pottery and glassblowing. For instance, if a basket maker’s sole intention is to weave a basket to be used as a container, we are talking about a craft. In this case, he is probably a skilled craftsman. But if he intends to make his basket as beautiful and unique as possible and turns it into a decorative object, we are talking about art. It is no wonder then that works of art were not signed in the Middle Ages ... But Jan Van Eyck changed all this!
