Plot : looking for patrimony in the neighbourhood Target group : second grade primary education Key words : neighbourhood, moveable patrimony, immoveable patrimony, immaterial patrimony, education for sustainable development Episode 1: The bag of Jodokus A bag is situated in the class room. In the bag we find a series of items: a visiting card of Jodocus the city comber, an envelope with jigsaw puzzles, a number of photographs of places, landscapes from the neighbourhood, a manual for the use of a GPS appliance, a binocular, etc. Moreover, the students also find personal belongings of Jodokus: a “lap book” with personal recollections, a well-thumbed notebook with annotations,… The address of a website is mentioned on the visiting card. On this website, the students learn all kinds of useful information about Jodokus. Furthermore, he gives them an assignment…. Key questions for the teacher: Who does this bag belongs to ? Learning activities: Group discussion: examination of the bag and the website In groups or in class by means of digibord: surf to the web address and getting acquainted with the website. He asks them to explore the neighbourhood purposively. Just like the personal recollections , there are items in the neighourhood that many people want to preserve. Jodokus calls them :“patrimony” and already gives a series of examples. It may be tangible items, such as objects, buildings, beautiful scenery,…but also intangible items which you cannot grasp such as habits, festivities, stories, songs, recipes,… Key questions for the eacher during the walk: What do you see? What do you hear? What do you feel? What do you smell? Which connection can you find with your jigsaw puzzle? Key questions for the teacher in the class: What does Jodokus wish to tell us with this puzzle? What is patrimony? Why do many people wish to preserve patrimony in our neighbourhood? Learning activities: Walk in the neignbourhood with twofold assignment: 1.Set out for a walk in the neignbourhood with the words on your jigsaw puzzle. Observe what you can see. Find connections between your words and the neighbourhood. Make photographs. 2. If you find something which you would personally like to preserve in your neighbourhood, you may photograph it. Group discussion: reassemble and discuss the Wordle-puzzel. Once the puzzle is reassembled, you will find some explanations about patrimony at the back side. He had already started with his collection in the bag. However, the collection is not entirely completed. We therefore start looking in the neighbourhood for items which could elucidate and complete Jodokus’ collection. Each time we succeed in finding something, we preserve it digitally via the website and we also add why something is precious. Jodokus also gives the students the opportunity to complete his list with favourite items with proper precious pieces of patrimony from the neighbbourhood. Learning activities: Each group receives a piece of patrimony for examination. They find their location by means of GPS. On the spot, they initiate their research by means of assignments such as interview, “dear photograph”,… As many intelligencies as possible are practised during the assignments. All the acquired knowledge is accurately inventarised and preserved via the website. The students get the opportunity to examine and add proper precious items from the neighbourhood. They most certainly would be able to learn us some more and help us to complete the collection. That is why he sends us the GPS coordinates or itinerary of the places where we can meet his friends. How will we be able to remember what these people are telling us? Prepare the visit to local partners by making an an appointment by telephone, mail or letter.
