THE GHENT ALTARPIECE: Lambert Van Eyck

Transfer of sketches

A sketch is transferred to panel or canvas by copying it. For this purpose, the same materials are used as for the preparatory sketches: pen and ink, charcoal, a brush and ink or paint, a silver rod, chalk or a pencil. The sketch can also be magnified.

Jan Van Eyck made detailed sketches which were important in his studio for two reasons: this allowed him to entrust some of the painting to his brother Lambert and other assistants, and facilitated making copies.

Painting horses is looking with your heart

From an early age Lambert Van Eyck was fascinated by horses. At home, in Maaseik, he liked to care for these noble animals. It was therefore he put the animals on paper in the stables. When they were on the meadow, he drew them in motion. He passionately painted the suppleness, the throbbing vein under the translucent skin ... "These details," he said, "make the horse come at you from the paper, make it your horse, lifelike. You can't get around it, everything breathes that restrained power, hushed emotion. "
